Discussion Reflection

I found that I am left wondering about how it would be different scenario in common day. I am left wondering whether at this age of supposive enlightenment whether we can be manipulated in seeing a race and or country as inferior, and feel like we can civilize and rebuild them the correct way. I feel like that it is possible for people to manipulated even in todays age.

Chapter 1 Congo Stuff

In chapter 1 King Leopold has hired  stanley morton to continue with his humanitarian work, but to also sign treaties witht the people of the congo. Overall he came to rule the Congo and when it ended up becoming an independent country King Leopold had full control of the country. I found this to be kinda slow at start, but it kinda got interesting as you saw King Leopold gain more and more control of the Congo.

Two questions I have are
-What is King Leopolds Motive besides natural resources in the Congo
-How will King Leopold fend off the European powers who want parts of Africa

End of Class Thoughts

I am interested in learning more about the wars between the countries where imperlism took place

I thought it was interesting about how some saw it as being humanitarian view of imperilism

In Class Current Events

1. What's being discussed in this article? The article is discussing china's one child law that is in effect for around 40% of china. a law lecturer was fired for having more then one baby and it has created more discussion about the one child law. Scientist argue that the average children per family will decrease if the 1 child law is scrapped.
2. When did the event happen? (Is this breaking news or something that's been analyzed and discussed for a while?) He was fired in March and this article is from August so it isn't breaking news, but it has not been analyzed for to long period of time
3. What questions do you have that would help make this article make more sense to you? What more do you need to learn about to be able to report on this event? I want to see more research on the fertility rate and how it varies and then learn more about the 1 child law and its validity and its change in fertility rate over time.
